Mr Muthaura took over at the helm of the markets regulator in June 2012 after Stella Kilonzo stepped down. Treasury Secretary Henry Rotich in a notice on the Kenya Gazette appointed Mr Muthaura to hold the position for a period of four years.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 8 (1) of the Capital Markets Act, the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury appoints Paul Murithi Muthaura to be the chief executive of the Capital Markets Authority for a period of four years with effect from 2nd January 2016,” the notice says.

Under his tenure, the CMA has instituted several reforms in the capital markets as well as the introduction of various products.

These include the rollout of Real Estate Investment Trusts, Exchange Traded Derivatives, Exchange Traded Funds and the overhaul of the corporate governance standards with the recent introduction of a code of corporate governance.
